About a month ago, Flickr gave an oportunity to participate in a global photo exhibition in London. So I tought that it was a good idea to send a few photos there to see what could happened. This exhibition is being carried out by Photomonth.
Flickr has created a group called Freedom 2008, where all the people could send some photos and then a group of reviewers selects some for the exhibition. A few photos will be printed and some others will be displayed on a digital slideshow. This exhibition takes place between October 29th and November 9th.
The theme for the group is simple: free. So you may guess why the group is called Freedom 2008.
A few days ago I received an email from one of the reviewers telling me that two of my photos had been selected for the digital slideshow!
I believe that about 150 photos were selected among 900, so having two photos in that 150 makes me very happy!
These are the photos that were selected:
You can find more information about the exibition here and here.
And here you can see the venue where the exhibition takes place.

Classical Cars in Cuba

Today I felt like reviewing some old photos and I found this one from my trip to Cuba in 2006 with my girlfriend. Till now, this is one of the best trips I have ever done in my life. I visited San José, the capital of Costa Rica, La Habana, La Isla de la Juventud and Varadero in Cuba.
I recommend visiting Cuba to anyone, it’s a fantastic place to go. Despite the poverty the country suffers in some areas, Cuba is worth visiting. The city of La Habana is incredible, it has lots of old buildings, some of them are in ruins.People play chess and music in the streets. I think this city is pretty unique in this way.
Besides, the weather in Cuba is great for my taste, it’s always hot and you don’t need to wear warm clothes. Talking about hot weather reminds me of a cool cuban drink: the mojito from the Bodeguita del Medio. The Bodeguita del Medio is a very famous bar in Cuba where they make this deilicious and famous drink.
The photo: I took this one in front of the Museum of the Revolution. When we got out of the museum I saw this city scene with the sign of Fidel Castro and with these two classical cars, which are found all over La Habana.
Some of these classical cars are used as taxis or can be rented for the day, with a driver included, to travel around the city. Luckily, our hotel was in the middle of the city so we didn’t have to spend much money in transportation.
I want to say this again.. if you have the chance to travel to Cuba, do it, you won’t regret it!

Little Tree

I’m back with a new photo, very different from the last one!
As you can see, this is a little decorative tree that was captured by my camera.
The original image looks good, but I couldn’t resist doing some adjustments to it. I’ve saturated the blue and orange colors and I’ve also desaturated the green one. Finally, I’ve added some dark vignette to focus the attention on the center of the image. Here’s the original one:

Looking again at this image, I realize that some other adjustments (not digitally) can be done to improve this image as removing the grass (on the right) and the green carpet (on the left) from the frame and also removing the dark shadow on top of the tree produced by the table at the back.
I think that small details, like the ones I’ve just mentioned, make the difference between an ordinary photo and a real good one. That’s something I’m starting to learn as time goes by.

Not too serious

If trying something different in my last post wasn’t enough, I don’t have words to describe this photo.
My girlfriend and I decided to try the remote shooting using the pc and here’s the result: as you can see, not too serious… but it was really funny, specially because I don’t do these things too often… or never!
Let’s see who doesn’t have one of these photos!

Humanist’s demonstration

In a previous post, when I showed a photo of the Argentinean Flag and the Obelisk, I mentioned that, in the same place, there was a small demonstration. That demonstration was being held by a group of humanists who were claiming the message of “No Violence”.
While I was taking photos of the Argentinean flag and waiting for it to be aligned and spread out by wind, I’ve started to hear some drums and people singing. When I turned around, I saw this small group of people walking around the Obelisk, all dressed in orange clothes. I thought: “what a nice opportunity to take some photos of this scene!”
I took some far away images and then decided to get closer as the people there looked pacific. When I approached the two people holding the orange flag which read “Humanistas No-Violencia” (Humanist No-Violence in English) they posed for me so I could take the photo. They thought that I was from a newspaper or a magazine!

Apart from all of these people carrying the message of “No Violence” there was a fake Chinese dragon. Don’t ask me what this has to do with the demonstration, I don’t understand it either, but there it was. You can see it in the third image of this post.
While I continued shooting, I had this feeling of everyone looking at me as if I were a journalist or something of the sort. So in the end I felt like one for a moment!
After several shots my lunch time was over and I needed to go back to the office, just one block and a half away from there.

Even though these images aren’t as “artistic” as the ones I’m used to take and post here, it’s nice to try something different.
Cheers!
Gabriel
